DESCRIPTION:On Aug. 23\, 1994\, the United States Congress designated Dec. 7 as National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. Every year\, remembrance events are held at the Pearl Harbor National Memorial\, culminating in a commemoration ceremony on Dec. 7. \nEach year on Dec. 7\, Pearl Harbor Survivors\, veterans\, and visitors from all over the world come together to honor and remember the 2\,403 service members and civilians who were killed during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7\, 1941. A further 1\,178 people were injured in the attack\, which permanently sank two U.S. Navy battleships (the USS Arizona and the USS Utah) and destroyed 188 aircraft. \nThe United States flag is lowered to Half-Staff on December 7th.

This celebration is considered an “internal” event for active and reserve Coast Guard members\, plus their civilian employees and retirees and members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. \nThe Coast Guard still participates in Armed Forces Day and Armed Forces Week\, but unlike their other military counterparts\, they still have their own individual day to celebrate the accomplishments of this branch of the United States Military. The other four branches had their days (Air Force Day\, Army Day\, Navy Day\, and Marine Corps Day) consolidated into Armed Forces Day.

This observance is slightly complicated due to the nature of American air power at the time\, but the designation of Air Force Day was an important step toward the recognition of United States air superiority in both Europe and Asia at the time. \nAir Force Day was last observed on August 1\, 1949. The Air Force Birthday is celebrated on September 18th each year.
