At a meeting of Daniel R. Olsen American Legion Post 594, the members unanimously voted to finance and staff a monthly breakfast at the Fisher House located next to the VA Hospital & Medical Center in Minneapolis. A Fisher House is “a home away from home” for families of patients receiving care at major military or VA medical centers. Those families do not pay room or board at a Fisher House.
In working with the leadership team at Eagan Hy-Vee, it was agreed that Hy-Vee will provide Post 594 with gift cards to support the associated food purchases during the first three months of the program. Continuation of Hy-Vee’s support will then be reviewed after this initial period. “We really appreciate Hy-Vee stepping up to assist us on this meaningful post initiative. They are helping us make a difference for the families of active duty and veteran patients.” said Post 594 Commander John Flynn.
On Saturday, August 10, 2019, six Post 594 members cooked and prepared breakfast at the Fisher House. Participants were Joe Dolan, Cheryl and Dan Seanoa, Wayne Olsen, Tom Mullon, and John Flynn (not pictured).
The Fisher House management has informed Commander Flynn that Daniel R. Olsen Post 594 is the first American Legion post in Minnesota helping with meals at their site.
